In a country like the US where the people truly run the country. No matter how they say they hate it, want to destroy it or think it is holding them down. We truly our run by our citizens. I have friends red, white and brown and we all believe in and love Democracy. As we are well read and studied, yet poor. As such, in economic warfare, Democracies can't do such things as help genocide to gain resources, use their state's power as a whole to compete unfairly. As doing such things like specifically helping their massive state owned enterprises to commit a number of crimes so they can get the resource contract or better business contracts.
This is because the side of the political spectrum that sees the other side doing it will use it against them to get them out of office. As it helps the government destroy the citizen funds to run for office.
Therefore, we saw the German Socialist party or the Soviet Union do abusive things without any Democracy check. Currently we are now seeing the Communist Chinese Party along with their MSS doing these things. Specifically because they where not willing to nationalize their military and intelligence. So all political parties via vote and proper research through their own party intelligence units could be used to stop such actions. Therefore, that means there is nobody to stop the MSS from doing these things. Where as in the US as our Democracy has grown strong and healthy. We can see a huge number of checks and balances against such unfair economic warfare activities and outright civil atrocities.

Basically, a Democracy is the most expensive and hardest type of regime to help set up. As it means a balance between opposing forces. As such, if we just went to Iraq for oil, then we are really bad at math. As it has cost us more money than we have gained for just being there; than we could have gained no matter what economic equation you do. Maybe, they could say where are there to stabilize the oil fields. Which I then say, true. But that means we are there to set up a Democracy. Which we did. However, it was not for oil. It was for world stability and peace. Then hear is what I have heard every time, yelling at me, calling me an imperialist. Which I laughing, as I walking away say, no imperialism is your idea of destroying Democracy and setting up a single power tribe system.
Democracy allows for the opposing sides to chop down the other side before they become to oppressive. Along with that in a Democracy if two sides start to collude to become to powerful against the people; it allows for new parties to take the government over, like we have seen in history.
